We talk about the importance of neutering and spaying your pets…but what about the immediate aftermath? What do they need after their surgery is finished?
Warmth is priority. Whether it’s your pet cat or a feral cat resting in their crate or trap, they need heat just as we would in the aftermath of surgery and the trauma of the day. A trap, crate or bed can be placed near a safe heat source or their bedding over a heat pad while they rest and heal.
Rest and quiet are also important, as is supervision just to watch them in case of any bleeding, discomfort or nausea. Your vet will advise when to feed but your pet might not want much straight away. Access to clean water is essential.
A quiet environment with familiar smells and bedding will all be very reassuring and in the case of a cat in a trap, cover the trap with a blanket and leave in a dimly lit, warm and quiet area.
Follow your vet’s advice about stitches and keep an eye, whether dissolvable or otherwise, just to ensure the wound is dry and healing well. When your cat is mobile, keep indoors and discourage any climbing or jumping.
Remember what we all need after medical procedures…comfort, reassurance and warmth.
