In February 2023, a volunteer wrote: ‘Champ came to us last Thursday after doing his required 5 days in the pound. He was found straying so we have no idea of his history.
What we can tell you is that Champ is a male collie. We aren’t sure of his age but he is young. Around 1 or 2.
Physically he is skin and bone. The thinnest dog I have seen since I started volunteering almost 2 years ago. He needs small amounts of nourishing food regularly to build up his weight slowly. His paws are raw and bleeding – this could be from pacing, being left stand in his own waste, digging his way out??? We are working on healing these wounds.
Emotionally – he is very nervous. It is clear he hasn’t seen the kind side of humanity but he is trying so hard to trust again. We are allowing him space and time to engage with us on his terms and at his pace.
This is hard to witness and yes it is emotional. Every single volunteer that met Champ felt sad and emotional. Sad at what he has experienced at such a young age. Angry that people can be so cruel. We are just glad that Champ is with us now. He is safe. He is warm. He has food. He has love.
This is only the beginning of his story. He has a beautiful temperament. So gentle. No aggressiveness whatsoever.’

In March 2023, Champ headed off to his new home and life.

It’s one year since we first met Champ, now CJ. He has settled into his new home, “and now calls the shots “. I have since retired so we are out walking every day at least twice for long walks and runs. CJ still has some issues with things but his answer is to curl up beside one of us. He has put on weight and now looks as he should but he still eats as fast as he can and reminds us when his meals are due, but if he has a hard chew treat he will bring it over to us to “ share “ which we are amazed by. We are really grateful for CJ becoming part of our family, and thank you for all the hard work you and your fellow volunteers do.
