Denny
Denny was approximately a four year old Foxhound and just out of the pound in September, 2022.. Lady and Rusty came from the same place as Denny and were possibly his sisters. In all that time at his previous home, it was estimated he has probably never known a kind hand and he definitely has never known what a full belly is like. He was very underweight when he arrived but has steadily put on weight and his coat looked a lot healthier after about four months at the shelter.

After a month in the shelter, a volunteer wrote:
‘Denny has been settling in with us over the last week or so and we all agree that he is a beautiful gentle boy We really need to find him a home as I am falling in love with him and may just have to bring him home myself 
He is a little unsure of the world but is trusting us to explore it with him and teach him what living is really all about. He ADORES company. So he really needs a home where someone is around most of the time. He loves his walks and the longer he has to sniff and follow his nose – the better. He walks so well on the lead and is a pleasure to be out with. He gets on great with other dogs. Despite his history he has such a trusting nature with all of the volunteers in the centre. He doesn’t jump on anyone. He just loves to be beside you getting rubs and kisses and told how he is “the best boy” … Which of course he is 
He has a slight limp when he walks. This is from an old broken bone that received no medical attention and re-set itself. Other than that he is in good health.’

In March 2023 he was described by one of the volunteers as everyones favourite dog here at the centre! He loved nothing more than human affection and company.

Then, there was amazing news on a wet Sunday morning 
After a year with us and time in the pound before that, Denny is off to his new home

Noreen was asked why she chooses to volunteer at the MSPCA centre: “I started volunteering for my love of dogs being around and learning all new things about different breeds, while volunteering I fell in love with a foxhound named Denny who I ended up adopting and he has brought so much happiness to my life. volunteering is absolutely brilliant for both my physical and mental health. Lots of our supporters followed Denny’s story and rejoiced when he found his forever home with our wonderful volunteer Noreen. Very sadly Noreen had to say goodbye to Denny yesterday and we are so very sorry for your heartbreaking loss (March, 2026).
(March, 2026).“Denny joined my family on the 23rd of July and moved in fully on the 30th of July 2023, after successful meets and greets with sonny, from once he moved in he settled in straight away and loved being at home. He loved his walks with me and his brother sonny. He adored my dad who he would chill with in the evenings beside the fire watching TV. He was adored by the whole family. He was perfect. So many beautiful hellos and only one painful ’till we meet again.’ I was so lucky to have been Dennys mom for the last 3 years and only wish that I had more time with him, he survived so much in his past he gave me 2 more weeks of love after his diagnosis. His cuddles and paws in the face, the howling in the morning and taking the duvet off me to wake me up, the walks and of course play time are memories ill forever hold and forever miss

Rusty and Lady

Lady and Rusty came to the shelter in December 2022 from the same place as Denny and were two beautiful female foxhounds . They are also about 4 years of age and are possibly his sisters. We could only assume they had the same experience as Denny had. No experience of kindness and starved

No experience of kindness and starved They were extremely thin when they arrived and were so hungry. Just like Denny they had a beautiful gentle temperament. It never ceases to amaze us how these dogs trust again after all they have been through. Lady and Rusty were extremely bonded. They curled up together all the time and slept together.

In July, 2023 they were both still in the shelter and were described as: They love their walks. Rusty trots along like a little pony with her head high up in the air sniffing the breeze. She is as light as a feather on the leash. Lady is the complete opposite. Her nose is stuck to the ground following whatever scent that has caught her fancy.

In 2022, Rusty, Lady & Denny arrived to our shelter. The most beautiful foxhounds . No one could ever have imagined the trauma and cruelty of their past. We knew they were a result of a cruelty case but not any specific details. They had a really strong ‘chemical’ smell and it was obvious that they literally ate anything they could to stave off their hunger. The plastic they passed when going to the toilet showed us the cause of this smell.

We will let you read the findings of the court case and draw your own conclusions. But we are extremely grateful to the Mayo dog wardens and local Garda for getting these dogs out of their dire environment.
Denny became a well known star on our instagram page and was loved by all of our followers. He was adopted by one of our own volunteers. A sign of the special place he held in all our hearts.
Lady & Rusty were very bonded so we were thrilled when they found forever home together.
A happy ending for these 3 dogs but as you all know …. this type of neglect and cruelty is happening every day. Please report any concerns you have about any dog to the Mayo dog warden so no dog is left to suffer in similar circumstances.
