Fawn (now Fran)

In the national newspapers:
…
In January 2016, we were over whelmed by all the texts, phone calls and emails we received about Fawn, when her story went viral. One volunteer wrote: ‘Fawn is doing well, considering what she has been through. It’s like she knows she is safe now. Some of the pellets have made there way out of her body. Fawn is enjoying lovely dinners of rice and chicken, enjoying the love and attention she is receiving. Thank you all for your wonderful support.’

In February, 2016 a volunteer wrote:

‘This evening I had the pleasure of walking Fawn and it is amazing how far she has come in such a short period of time. When Fawn was rescued by our team she was emaciated, weak and riddled with pellets. Pellets that came from a fire arm, held by some ruthless person.
Today Fawn knows the love of all our volunteers, the taste of chicken and sausages(cooked by our wonderful Maureen). The feel of gentle hands stroking her and warm voices talking with her. Fawn will not know the pain she suffered ever again,as we at Mayo SPCA will make sure she only knows love going forward.’ Fawn was feeling grateful and wrote to express her thanks to everyone who was helping on her road to recovery: ‘Fawn wants to say A Big Thank You to Tommy Rattigan and Mick Mooney for her new feed table. It makes eating so much easier on her. Thanks to Jason Lundy for the yummy food he sent in to Fawn. We would like to thank all who have called in to see her, bring her for a walk, bring her toys, treats and donated to her medical fund. To all the volunteers who have helped to look after her, she has had so much love it has helped her recover and start to play.’

In April 2016, Fawn was ready to be fostered or adopted. Little did she know, there was still adventures to be had in the shelter before Fawn and her forever family would find each other! 🙂

In May, 2016, a volunteer wrote: ‘Well done to our wonderful volunteer Jack who has just won a lovely collar for Fawn. Jack entered Fawn into a competition and won. Jack is a fantastic volunteer who is a pleasure to work with.’

Fawn spent Summer 2016 supporting the Mayo team every step of the way. Up Mayo!

In December, 2016. Fawn was still looking for her forever family: ‘Hello everyone, hope you are all doing good. I was out early this morning taking Marian for a walk😄. I am doing great and Marian told me I walk very well on my lead.’

In April 2017, FAWN WAS ADOPTED!!!
A voluteer wrote: ‘“I wonder if I will ever find a home of my own ”
Well, tonight for one very special dog, she will never need to think this again. The best news for one lovely dog called Fawn and for all at MAYO SPCA, Fawn has found her forever home and has been adopted.
Volunteers work with sick, injured, abandoned and abused animals on a daily basis; this can be very demanding and stressful work. Seeing dogs in kennels day after day and wondering if they will ever find a home can add to the everyday stress of working with unwanted and abused animals.
So, on a day like today, it makes it all worthwhile. All the volunteers at Mayo SPCA can rejoice at Fawn’s good news. We would like to say a very BIG thank you to the lovely family that adopted her, you are indeed very special. To all of you who donated towards Fawn’s veterinary care and the good wishes you sent us, thank you very much.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Marian and all the volunteers who took such great care of Fawn. You are a wonderful band of people.
Fawn’s Story
In January 2016 Fawn was found by a member of the public in a dreadful emaciated state. She was very distressed and very sick. On further investigation, it was discovered that Fawn had been shot in the face and eyes, resulting in her losing her eyesight.
Fawn was a broken soul who was absolutely terrified of everything. Here was a once healthy young dog, now reduced to a shivering, shaking wreck.’

In 2018, this little lady again needed our help, she wasn’t feeling her best so her family took her to the vet just before Christmas where they found out she needed to have an operation on her legs to make her better and more comfortable so she can live out her full life with all those cuddles walks and adventures. A go fund me page was set up and the community donated so that Fawn could undergo the operation.
…
In February 2018, her forever family said: ‘Fran would once again like to thank all her friends who supported her and her mum and dad with
her recent operation. Her recovery is going well and she and her mum and dad can’t wait until she can get off the lead and go mad again.’

Remember beautiful Fawn (now Fran)? A lovely update from her brilliant family❤️ thank you so much Ray and Judith!
4 yrs ago a phone call was made to Mayo SPCA reporting a stray emaciated and blind dog. That dog who was given the name Fawn was found to have been shot with a shotgun, hence the blindness, and was riddled with pellets. Thanks to the kindness of the MSPCA and their volunteers she was nursed back to life and captured hearts everywhere. Following the sudden death of our two german shepherds nearly 3 yrs ago we decided to adopt her. We gave her the name Fran as a new start. It soon became clear that she was loveable and fearless and highly intelligent, and any fears we had were unfounded. One year later we noticed she had a limp and a vet examination showed a serious leg problem that needed expensive surgery. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of friends and supporters enough money was raised for her to have a successful operation. Today she is still fearless and loving and we wouldn’t be without her. Her favourite things are eating, sleeping, playing with her ball, going for walks, and er…snoring and farting. (January, 2020)

Who remembers our beautiful warrior, Fran?
A gorgeous update on how she is doing, ten years later, happy in her wonderful home ❤️
“Fran is doing great. She’s my velcro dog. Wherever I am there she is. I get up later in the morning than Raymond so having slept next to me all night she goes downstairs with him to get her breakfast then comes straight back to me and snuggles up next to me until I get up. Age is catching up on her and she sometimes has difficulty coming down our steep stairs so she waits at the top so we can guide her down safely. We lost our rescue cat of 16 years a few months ago. Fran had got used to him but we were subsequently adopted by a feral cat who had been living in the barn for a while. He’s decided we’re OK people and has moved in with us. He’s usually waiting outside the kitchen door to come in. He wants to be friends with Fran but she’s a wimp and won’t go near him unless I’m with her. We had Fran DNA tested a few years back as everyone was guessing her breed, turns out there’s no specific breed they could identify and that she is a mixture of goodness knows what. At the moment she is snoring on the settee, her favourite place.” (February, 2026)
