Hot Weather Heatstroke

As temperatures rise, our pets are at risk of heatstroke, a life-threatening emergency that can develop very quickly.
⚠️ Signs of heatstroke include:
• Excessive panting (especially in dogs)
• Rapid breathing or difficulty breathing
• Drooling
• Lethargy or weakness
• Bright red or very pale gums
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Confusion, collapse, or seizures
💡 Did you know?
Cats don’t usually pant, so if your cat is panting, it can be a sign they are dangerously overheated and need urgent veterinary attention.
💧 How to keep your pets safe:
✅ Keep them indoors or in the shade during the hottest part of the day.
✅ Make sure fresh, cool water is always available.
✅ Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening.
✅ Never leave any pet in a parked car—not even for a few minutes.
✅ Provide cool resting areas, cooling mats, or damp towels.
✅ Watch extra carefully over puppies, kittens, senior pets, overweight pets, and flat-faced breeds, as they are more vulnerable.
🚨 If you suspect heatstroke:
• Move your pet to a cool, shaded place.
• Contact your veterinary practice immediately—heatstroke is an emergency.
