What is TNR and what is involved?
TNR (Trap–Neuter–Return) is a humane method used throughout Ireland to manage populations of feral, stray, and community cats. The cats are humanely trapped, neutered (or spayed), and then returned to the area where they live. This stops breeding, reduces nuisance behaviours, and gradually reduces colony sizes over time.
What’s involved?
- Trap
- A humane live trap is used to safely catch the cat.
- Food is often used as bait.
- The trap is checked regularly to minimise stress to the animal.
- Neuter/Spay
- The cat is taken to a vet for neutering.
- Many TNR programmes also provide basic health care such as parasite treatment if needed.
- Ear-Tipping
- While under anaesthetic, a small portion of one ear tip is removed.
- This is the internationally recognised sign that a cat has already been neutered through TNR.
- Return
- After recovery, the cat is returned to its original territory.
- Feral cats are generally not suitable as pets, so returning them is usually the best welfare option.
