I volunteer because every time I volunteer, when I walk through the gate of the shelter I am immediately greeted by wagging tails, barking or meowing and just a place filled with life and second chances. Volunteering at the shelter is the best 3 hours of my week when I am able to do a shift.
Animals have always held a special place in my heart. Their love, loyalty, and joy is always so special knowing you are making a difference in their day as well as your own. Many of the animals that end up at the shelter come from situations of neglect, abandonment, or hardship and we usually don’t know their background. To witness their transformation, from scared and withdrawn to trusting and playful, is nothing short of magical and emotional. Being a part of that journey, even in a small way, is incredibly rewarding.
Volunteering also brings a sense of purpose and perspective. In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming or unfair, the shelter is a place where small acts make a big difference. Whether it’s helping an older or scared dog find a forever home or simply spending time with a scared dog or cat to help build its confidence, each moment counts. I’ve learned that being patient and being kind to the animals makes a huge difference, especially for animals that have never experienced love or much human contact, or especially those who have been abused.
There’s also a powerful sense of community at the shelter. Marian, the volunteers and adopters all share the same goal, to give these animals a better life. The happiness everyone feels when each animal finds their forever home, and sometimes the grief of a loss, everyone always works together. It’s a place of shared hope and shared effort, where everyone plays a part in something meaningful.
Most of all, I volunteer because the animals give me just as much, if not more, than I give them. They teach me patience, empathy, and happiness. Working with animals really improves my mental health and it is always way to escape. Each tail wag, purr, or happy bark is a thank you that speaks straight to the heart.
Volunteering at the animal shelter is not always easy, but it is always worth it. It is peaceful and rewarding after a hard week.
