Claire, one of our amazing fosterers, has brought up so many kittens and seen them off to their forever homes. At a time when we are really in need of fosterers for cats and kittens, especially anyone with bottle feeding experience, this is Claire’s experience of what makes fostering such an amazing thing to do. We are so grateful for all of her hard and very loving work.
“For a number of years I have been fostering for Mayo SPCA, and while I love all animals, cats have always held a special place in my heart. I’ve had a cat, or often several cats, in my life since I was four years old, and even after more than 40 years, they still surprise and teach me something new.
It has always seemed to me that cats are the underdogs when it comes to pet ownership in Ireland. Yet they are such remarkable animals, especially the tiny, vulnerable kittens that need help during their first weeks and months of life.
I’ve always been drawn to the smallest and most fragile creatures. There is something incredibly rewarding about helping a frightened, hungry kitten grow into a confident, healthy young cat. Watching them learn to play, explore, and trust people is a privilege.
Fostering can be emotional. Not every story has the ending we hope for, and there are times when you spend sleepless nights feeding tiny kittens and willing them to survive. But the successes make every effort worthwhile.
One of the greatest joys is seeing the cats you’ve cared for go on to live wonderful lives with loving families. Over the years I’ve received Christmas cards, photos, and regular updates from adopters. I’ve watched former foster cats become part of weddings, grow up alongside babies, and become treasured family members. Knowing that I played a small part in that journey is incredibly rewarding.
None of this would be possible without foster carers opening their hearts and homes to animals in need. You don’t need to be an expert—rescue organisations provide support and guidance—but what you do need is kindness, patience, and a willingness to make a difference.
If you have ever considered fostering, I would encourage you to give it some thought. The time, care, and love you offer can change an animal’s life forever. In return, you’ll experience the joy of watching them thrive and knowing that because of you, they had the chance they deserved.
Animals give us so much and ask for so little in return. We are lucky to share our lives with them.
